Working Together to Learn More

Olympus is using information from both our Human Factors Study and our Sampling and Culturing Study to guide the continuous enhancement of our reprocessing protocols, create new service and training programs and ensure open lines of communication between everyone involved in Olympus duodenoscope usage and reprocessing.
Based on the results of our Human Factors Study, we are working diligently to evaluate design changes that will enhance reprocessing efficacy, advance and simplify our IFUs (Instructions for Use), make additional reprocessing resources available to technicians and expand our training programs. Some examples of areas that were identified for additional training reinforcement include the following:

Thoroughly brushing the distal
end of the scope including the
forceps elevator.

Ensuring the forceps elevator is
raised and lowered during
certain cleaning steps.

Thoroughly drying external
surfaces and ports with a clean
cloth or sponge.

Ensuring the forceps elevator is
in the intermediate position
when utilizing an AER.

Establish an internal system of identifying contaminated versus reprocessed endoscopes and accessories to prevent both mix-ups and cross-contamination. Some national or professional guidelines recommend separating dirty (contaminated) area, clean area, and storage area. Touching a reprocessed endoscope and/or accessories with contaminated gloves or placing them on a contaminated hanger or surface, including letting them touch the floor, will recontaminate them.

Olympus partnered with the FDA for a Human Factors Study that developed a post-market surveillance survey for duodenoscope reprocessing.

The information from this Study has allowed Olympus to enhance training and focus our tools on helping users understand the critical, but unique, tasks involved in reprocessing duodenoscopes.
