Olympus ORBEYE® Video Microscope to Appear on ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," Thursday, January 31, 8|7c
“Game Changer” 4K-3D Video Microscope Featured During a Neurosurgical Procedure
CENTER VALLEY, Pa., (January 30, 2019) – Olympus, a global technology leader in designing and delivering innovative solutions for medical and surgical procedures, among other core businesses, announced today that its ORBEYE® video microscope will appear on ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” on Thursday, January 31 at 8|7c.
Written by Elisabeth R. Finch and directed by Allison Liddi-Brown, the episode will see neurosurgeon Amelia Shepherd reference the ORBEYE video microscope as a “game changer.” “Grey’s Anatomy” is now in its 15th season on ABC and will become the longest running primetime medical drama in February. The series is produced by Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland, in association with The Mark Gordon Company and ABC Studios.
Character Amelia Shepherd is reacting to the immersive, 3D experience enabled by the ORBEYE video microscope, which allows the entire surgical team to observe surgery on an expansive 55-inch 4K, 3D monitor. The precise 4K digital images from the ORBEYE video microscope provide high-resolution 3D imaging of the structure of tissue, blood vessels and other features.
“We are very proud that a leading medical drama would look for the most innovative surgical devices, such as the ORBEYE video microscope, to feature on the show. But perhaps more exciting for patients is that there are many hospitals in the United States that have already adopted the system or are evaluating it for use,” said Randy Clark, President, Medical Systems Group, Olympus Corporation of the Americas. “The ORBEYE video microscope’s combined benefits in surgeon ergonomics, imaging quality, small footprint and the inclusion of the entire surgical team represent a first in the micro surgery field. We’re excited that millions tuning in will get a glimpse of real-world advancements in surgery.”
Surgeons may benefit from ORBEYE video microscope’s ergonomic, “heads-up” experience. By displaying the progress of surgical procedures on a large 55-inch monitor, ORBEYE has the potential to reduce surgeon fatigue by eliminating the need for extensive viewing via microscope eyepieces as well as to allow the entire surgical team to see the procedure. Available for a range of surgical specialties – including neuro, pediatrics and reconstructive surgery – the ORBEYE video microscope makes it possible to replace lens-based optics, which is especially helpful when operating on babies or the spine. The ORBEYE video microscope is a recent Edison Award™ digital imaging Gold winner.
Introduced by Olympus in October 2017, the ORBEYE video microscope was developed by Sony Olympus Medical Solutions Inc. (SOMED), a joint venture between Olympus Corporate and Sony Imaging Products & Solutions Inc.
